MEET JAMES WALKER
ARTIST AND KEEPER OF THE FAMILY LIGHT
“How I’m not dead is beyond me. I use so much turpentine.”
James Walker has worn many hats throughout his career: horse wrangler, commercial illustrator, gallery owner, and, most importantly, artist.
These days, you are most likely to find James leading tours at the Pollock-Krasner House in the Hamptons or painting from his studio on the North Fork. No matter where you find him though, one thing is certain: James is always searching for the perfect light.
That pursuit ultimately brought him from Colorado to the Hamptons. He discovered the magic of its light during a beach holiday with his then-five-year-old daughter, Courtney. He painted her running from the water, a rare departure for the artist who otherwise focused on landscapes, and never included human figures in his work. That painting of his daughter on the beach now proudly hangs above the fireplace in James’s home.

A LEGACY CONTINUED
“I came to the Hamptons to paint, not expecting it to affect me. I came home to a place I had never been before.”
James feels right at home at the Pollock-Krasner House. It makes sense considering his grandmother was Jackson Pollock’s aunt. James never met his second cousin Jackson Pollock or his wife Lee Krasner in person, but he remembers showing his friends at school their paintings in the World Book Encyclopedia. Of Pollock’s disruptive kinetic pieces, those classmates would respond with, “that’s not a painting.”
Beyond the familial connection and shared careers as artists, the two share a number of striking similarities. Both are the youngest of five siblings, and both credit the influence and mentorship of an older brother as instrumental in their decision to pursue art as a career. And just as James was drawn to the Hamptons by its extraordinary light, so was Pollock decades before.
The house is a remarkable record of both Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner, two of the most celebrated abstract impressionists of the 20th century. On the floor of the studio are remnants of Pollock’s kinetic process: splatters of paint that missed the canvas. On the walls are traces of Krasner’s brushwork, remnants of the large-scale paintings she created there after Pollock’s death.
James paintings capture the Hampton's trademark light, the particular glow that has drawn artists to out East for generations.
WALKER’S: A STORE THAT WAS QUINTESSETIALLY JAMES
“I’ve never had an art major wear cuffed pants before!” - James’ Professor at Colorado College
James has always been a stylish guy with a deep appreciation for clothes. After graduating with an art degree, his first job was managing the Grandy Trading Post, a Western clothing store in Grand Lake, Colorado. While working at the seasonal trading post, James began dreaming up his first business: Walker’s.
The assortment would be quintessentially James: an aesthetic he defined as Brooks Brothers meets the Colorado Rockies. James loved the distinctive yokes and styling of traditional Western shirts but disliked the cheap, polyester versions flooding the market. He was adamant about offering something better. James’ store was coming together, when life threw him a curveball.
Now a single dad, James needed work he could do from home. After one of his gallery shows, a person who worked at Belcher Company, one of Colorado’s biggest construction firms, commissioned him as an illustrator. That gave him the chance to work as an artist and to raise his daughter.
Nonetheless, he has never stepped away from his distinct style.

A FINAL LOOK
James paints for himself these days, embracing the freedom that comes with it. After years of working toward the hard deadlines of clients and galleries, he now has the luxury of walking away from a painting for months at a time as he plots his next brushstrokes.
“Now I am able to explore more. These paintings are more personal. I am more at ease with taking chances."
